Frank Buchser (1828–1890), a painter and adventurer from Solothurn, was a man full of drive who set out from tranquil Switzerland into the big world. Armed with a gun and a brush, he traveled to distant countries and settled in the middle of war zones. His paintings offer fascinating insights into foreign cultures and tell of his experiences. In 1866, Buchser traveled to North America, commissioned to explore possibilities for a military alliance with the USA.
In her research project, Katharina Ramser not only examines Buchser's experiences, but also Switzerland's inglorious role in colonial history. She asks what lessons we can learn from the past to shape the future better.
